The credit union difference.

Before you jump on the credit union bandwagon, you probably should know what a credit union actually is.  First of all, we're awesome.  Oh, and second of all, we're not-for-profit.

(This is probably where you shout, "What?  A bank that's not all about sucking money from my wallet like a giant vacuum?  That's crazy talk!")

It's all true.  Except, we're not a bank.  We're a credit union -- a not-for-profit financial cooperative.  Here's the big difference...when you join, you OWN the credit union.

The credit union doesn't have profits.  Anything we earn, we give back to you (after we pay the utilities and all).  You get better loans and savings rates and a butt-load of free services (yes, we said "butt").  Oh, and we don't gouge you on dumb fees (like the daily overdraft fee the banks have).

You want a piece of us?

Okay.  We can arrange that.  But to own a piece of this credit union, you need to establish membership by opening a Share Savings Account and depositing $25.  That's your golden ticket, your share of ownership.  Now, you're a member of the credit union, with amazing access to all the products and services you need.

Step 1:  Eligibility

As a student of The Ohio State University, you're eligible to join just as soon as you enroll.  Once you're a member, you're always a member, even after you graduate.

Not a student?  Please visit the main credit union at www.cuofohio.org.

Step 2:  All about you.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  Print out your Membership Card and answer a few questions.  (We know, paper sucks.  An online application is coming soon!)

And of course, make sure you fill out each space completely and clearly, since omitted information could delay the opening of your account.  Under "How Are You Eligible for Membership," please let us know you're an OSU student.  We'll verify your enrollment.

Your information will be verified for enrollment and by the US Patriot Act.  (You may be asked for additional address verification in order to satisfy Uncle Sam.)  Please sign and date the card where indicated.

Step 3:  Fast way to do it.

Shortcut:  Stop by our Campus Branch.  Bring your driver's license and a document that verifies your address (utility bill, University Housing letter, etc.)  It's not required to fill out the membership card ahead of time, but if you want to be an overachiever, go for it.

Slower, but gets the job done:  Open your membership by mail.  Just include your membership card, a copy of your driver's license, address verification document and a check, made payable to "Credit Union of Ohio" to open your membership ($25).  If you're opening other accounts, please include additional funds for those.  We'll deposit all your money into your account(s) for your use.
