The credit union difference.

Before you jump on the credit union bandwagon, you probably should know what a credit union actually is.  First of all, we're awesome.  Oh, and second of all, we're not-for-profit.

(This is probably where you shout, "What?  A bank that's not all about sucking money from my wallet like a giant vacuum?  That's crazy talk!")

It's all true.  Except, we're not a bank.  We're a credit union--a not-for-profit financial cooperative. Here's the big difference...when you join, you OWN the credit union. Credit Union of Ohio doesn't have profits. Anything we earn, we give back to you. You get better loans and savings rates and loads of free services. Oh, and we don't gouge you on fees (like that daily overdraft fee others charge--what's up with that?).

You want a piece of us?

Okay.  We can arrange that.  But to own a piece of this credit union, you meet eligibility requirements and establish membership by opening a Student Share Savings Account and depositing $25.  That's your golden ticket, your share of ownership.  Now, you're a member of the credit union, with amazing access to all the products and services you need.

Step 1:  Eligibility

OSU Students:: As a Buckeye, you're eligible to join just as soon as you are accepted to OSU.  You must be between the ages of 18 and 24 to qualify for any student-designated account or loan at Credit Union of Ohio. Once you're a member, you're always a member, even after you graduate.

Not an OSU Student?  Student-designated accounts and loans are available to those who are eligible for membership in Credit Union of Ohio through other affiliations, meet the age requirement, and are seeking a degree or certification at any accredited college, university, technical or trade school.

Not a Student?  Please visit the main credit union at www.cuofohio.org.

Step 2:  All about you.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  Print out your Membership Application and answer a few questions.  (We know, paper sucks.  An online application is coming soon!)

And of course, make sure you fill out each space completely and clearly, since omitted information could delay the opening of your account.  Under "How Are You Eligible for Membership," please let us know you're an OSU Student.  We'll verify your enrollment and age eligibility for student services.

Your information will be verified for enrollment and by the US Patriot Act.  (You may be asked for additional address verification in order to satisfy Uncle Sam.)  Please sign and date the card where indicated.

Step 3:  Fast way to do it.

Shortcut:  Stop by our Campus Branch.  Bring your driver's license and a document that verifies your address (utility bill, University Housing letter, etc.)  It's not required to fill out the membership card ahead of time, but if you want to be an overachiever, go for it.

Slower, but gets the job done:  Open your membership by mail.  Just include your membership card, a copy of your driver's license, address verification document and a check, made payable to "Credit Union of Ohio" to open your membership ($25).  If you're opening other accounts, please include additional funds for those.  We'll deposit all your money into your account(s) for your use.
